Classroom Management and Loss of Time at the Lesson Start: A Preliminary Study

<p style="text-align:justify">Lesson starts are transitional events which may cause management problems for teachers. In this study 131 lesson starts of equally many teachers were observed in primary and secondary schools in Finland. The results indicated that, in general, the problems were minimal. However, for various reasons lesson starts were delayed by an average of about six minutes. Calculated on this basis, the total loss of instructional time in the whole school year was about five weeks of schooling. ANOTĀCIJA Ivetas Ozolas promocijas darba „Pedagoģijas zinātnes ģenēze Latvijā no 20. gadsimta 20. gadiem līdz 60. gadu sākumam” mērķis ir izpētīt, kā sociālpolitisku un zinātnes procesu kontekstā pedagoģija Latvijā laika posmā no 20. gadsimta 20. gadiem līdz 60. gadu sākumam veidojusies un attīstījusies kā patstāvīga zinātnes nozare. Darbā analizēti zinātnes veidošanās teorētiskie pamati, definējot dimensijas, kas raksturo atsevišķu zinātnes nozaru izveidošanos. This article continues an article written by the same author and published by CIRIEC-España in 1997 (no. 25). It analyses social economy at three cognitive levels: first, as a social reality (Social Economy); second, as a scientific discipline which studies its previous reality (the science of Social Economy); third, as a methodological approach in social sciences (the approach of Social Economy). The author claims that, at these three levels, social economy becomes an alternative way of “making the economy”.

In this article, we report a case study of our experiences of a curriculum reform process based on the principles of phenomenon-based learning in higher education in the context of Finnish teacher education. We explore how democracy and participation were present in the decision making process, highlighting the challenges of promoting the phenomenon-based approach and collaboration. Analysing the theory of the dual unity of Silesia presented by the Polish political scientist Józef Kokot, the author attempts to formulate theoretical criteria that make a region an object of interest for political scientists and regional studies, a subdiscipline of political science.
